DeRidder, Louisiana, marked a historic milestone by electing Michael D. Harris as the city’s first Black mayor on May 3, 2025. Harris secured the position in a closely contested runoff election, defeating Councilman-at-Large Danny Reynolds by a mere ten votes.
The mayoral race initially featured four candidates: Michael D. Harris, Mike Harper, Danny Reynolds, and Randy Larken. Following the initial round, Harris and Reynolds advanced to the runoff. The narrow margin of victory has prompted Reynolds to request a recount, scheduled for May 8.
Harris, a retired military officer, expressed his gratitude and vision for the city, stating, “Feeling great, man. Feeling great. Humbled and blessed. Put your seatbelt on. We’re going to have a wonderful ride. We’re going to do it together.” He emphasized plans to utilize his leadership experience to guide DeRidder into a new chapter, with a focus on transparency and community engagement.
The significance of Harris’s election resonates deeply within the community. Lue T. Smith, a 104-year-old resident, remarked, “I sure did never think it would happen in my lifetime.” She expressed optimism about the city’s future under Harris’s leadership.
As Harris prepares to assume office, he has initiated the formation of a transition team and begun preliminary discussions on the city budget with interim Mayor Randy Larken.
Formal discussions are set to commence post-swearing-in.
Harris’s election represents a significant step forward for DeRidder, reflecting the community’s desire for inclusive leadership and a commitment to progress.
