Representative Kweisi Mfume (D-Md.), a seasoned legislator with a distinguished career in public service, has officially announced his candidacy for the position of Ranking Member on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
This announcement follows the recent passing of Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.), who previously held the role.
In a statement released on May 29, Rep. Mfume declared, “I am formally announcing my candidacy for Ranking Member of the U.S. House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.”
Rep. Mfume’s extensive experience includes serving Maryland’s 7th congressional district and a tenure as the President and CEO of the NAACP from 1996 to 2004. His leadership roles have been marked by a commitment to civil rights and government accountability.
The race for the Ranking Member position also includes Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) and Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.), both of whom have announced their candidacies.
The Democratic caucus is scheduled to vote on the new Ranking Member on June 24.
