While most U.S. states conduct their major primary and general elections during even-numbered years, a few locations will see significant congressional, state, and local-level contests unfold in 2025.
Below is a timeline of key races that The Associated Press will be monitoring this year:
January
- January 7: Virginia will hold special general elections for two legislative seats: State Senate District and State House District 26. These seats became vacant after their previous occupants won congressional races, drawing attention from national Democrats.
February
- February 18: Wisconsin voters will head to the polls for primary elections to fill a seat on the state Supreme Court and for the position of State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
April
- April 1: Florida will conduct special elections for two U.S. House seats. The 1st District, a Republican stronghold, became vacant following the resignation of former Rep. Matt Gaetz, who had been nominated as attorney general by President-elect Donald Trump before withdrawing. Meanwhile, the 6th District is open after former Rep. Mike Waltz resigned to take up a role as Trump’s national security adviser.
- On the same day, Wisconsin will hold general elections for a state Supreme Court seat and the State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
May
- May 20: Pennsylvania will hold primary elections for seats on the state Supreme Court and Superior Court, as well as the Pittsburgh mayoral race and various municipal contests in Philadelphia.
June
- June 10: New Jersey will hold its gubernatorial and legislative primaries. Governor Phil Murphy recently signed legislation moving the election date from June 3 to June 10 to avoid coinciding with the Jewish holiday of Shavuot.
- June 17: Virginia will hold primaries for races including governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, and House of Delegates.
- June 24: New York City will hold primaries for its mayoral election and other municipal offices.
November
