In a bid to bridge the technology gap and foster self-esteem among young Black men, a national initiative with its roots in Chicago is gaining momentum.
The program, known as The Hidden Genius Project, is igniting the latent genius within these individuals by imparting knowledge in technology, entrepreneurship, and more. Source: CBS News
Eric Steen, the Chicago site director, elucidates, “The Hidden Genius Project is dedicated to training and mentoring Black male youth in technology creation, entrepreneurship, and leadership skills to empower them and their communities. Through our 15-month immersion program, participants acquire over 800 hours of computer science training.”
For participants like high school sophomore Samir Donnejour, the experience is transformative. “I’m passionate about coding. I enjoy delving into the intricacies of website development and expanding my skill set,” expresses Donnejour.
During a recent visit by CBS 2, the program participants were seen applying their coding expertise to develop real-world games, fostering teamwork and camaraderie in the process.
Steen emphasizes the significance of this camaraderie, stating, “Our aim extends beyond the confines of the program. These individuals form lifelong bonds, akin to brotherhood, which is crucial for their personal and professional growth.”
Yusuf Seward, who transitioned from intern to innovative educator within the program, underscores its impact on personal development. “Witnessing the growth of our participants, both in terms of skills and character, is immensely gratifying,” remarks Seward.
For 16-year-old Zuri, the program is a springboard for future aspirations in coding, computers, and applied chemistry. “Creating something unique resonates deeply with me,” Zuri shares.
Candace Kyles, the support services manager, plays a pivotal role in providing emotional and social support to the participants. “Ensuring that our participants have access to necessary services, be it academic support or mental health services, is paramount. Our genuine care fosters an environment of trust,” Kyles affirms.
Steen acknowledges the underrepresentation of Black individuals in the tech industry and stresses the program’s commitment to providing opportunities. “Our objective is to equip these young men with the tools and support they need to unleash their inherent genius. It truly takes a village to nurture these talents, and we are dedicated to being that village,” he asserts.
The Hidden Genius Project operates nationally, with branches in Chicago, Los Angeles, Detroit, and other cities. While welcoming participants of all genders, the program emphasizes curiosity as the only prerequisite.
