The Black population has grown most rapidly in states that have traditionally had smaller Black communities. Utah saw the highest increase between 2010 and 2023, with its Black population rising by 89%. Arizona, Nevada, and Minnesota followed, each experiencing a 60% increase during the same period. These states had at least 25,000 Black residents in 2010, making their growth rates among the highest in the country.
In terms of overall numerical growth, states with the largest Black populations also saw the most significant increases. Texas recorded the highest gain, adding 1.2 million Black residents, followed by Florida with 800,000 and Georgia with 610,000. As a result, these states have now surpassed New York, which had the largest Black population in 2010. Conversely, some areas saw declines; between 2010 and 2023, the Black population decreased in Mississippi and Illinois by 2% each, while the District of Columbia saw a 1% decline. Source: Pew Research
