The Maurice A. Ferré Institute for Civic Leadership recently hosted another impactful event as part of their Black Women in Law series, featuring Allison Matulli.
Matulli, an esteemed author, professor at FIU’s Criminology and Criminal Justice department, and former attorney, shared her profound belief in the importance of recognizing ‘free speech’ rights as fundamental to our identity, stressing the need to instill this understanding from a young age.
During the event, Matulli highlighted the critical issue of many children being unaware of their rights until they face challenges, inspiring her to establish the award-winning foundation, The Little Lawyers. To empower children to express their opinions, Matulli authored “Your Freedom, Your Power: A Kid’s Guide to the First Amendment,” offering middle schoolers a glimpse into American politics with relatable examples.
As moderator Melba Pearson guided the discussion, Matulli touched upon her Fulbright Scholar Award and her current research project exploring children’s experiences of freedom of speech across different nations. Drawing from her diverse experiences, including her tenure at the American consulate in Italy, Matulli emphasized the transformative power of the Fulbright program.
Driven by her curiosity to understand others, Matulli has traveled to over 30 countries, embodying the motto “one world, one voice.”
Looking ahead, Matulli shared her plans for an upcoming school book tour, aiming to visit multiple schools in each city. She urged the audience to embrace self-affirmation, advocating for a mindset that prioritizes saying “yes” to oneself amidst life’s challenges.
