The podcast series Black Education in Quebec is a captivating 9-part production by the LaSalle Multicultural Resource Centre (LMRC), designed to enrich the province’s educational environment. Hosted by journalists Phil Carpenter and Pat Dillon-Moore, with executive production by Gloria Ann Cozier and Dr. Lerona Dana Lewis, the series explores the Quebec school system through the authentic experiences of mostly retired Black educators.
The podcast sheds light on the significant contributions of Black teachers to Quebec’s education system. It underscores the importance of their representation and highlights how their efforts have shaped the lives of not only Black students but the broader Quebec student body.
This series draws inspiration from the 2023 LMRC-led research project, “Changing Black Youth Futures.” The study delved into the experiences of Black students in Quebec schools, uncovering exclusionary practices that have hindered the academic success of both Anglophone and Francophone Black youth. The two-year research project found that Black students are frequently placed in special groups, subjected to racially hostile environments, and faced with biased practices.
The insights from this research have paved the way for new programs and initiatives at LMRC. Dr. Lerona Dana Lewis, one of the leading researchers, recognized the podcast as a natural progression of the project, offering a platform to elevate these essential voices and narratives.
LMRC is dedicated to mobilizing resources to offer appropriate care and access to limited English-language services, helping individuals achieve their highest potential and well-being. Through culturally sensitive, humble, and professional work, LMRC offers health promotion, prevention, early intervention programs, counseling/therapy, education, workshops, and anti-racism and anti-oppression awareness forums aimed at improving the lives of marginalized children, adults, seniors, and families.
