The Black population in the Spring and Klein area experienced a notable growth of 41% over a five-year span, rising from 30,566 individuals identifying as Black or African American in 2018 to 43,154 in 2023, according to the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

On December 12, the U.S. Census Bureau released its updated five-year data from the 2023 American Community Survey. This dataset provides a comprehensive estimate of the population from 2019 to 2023, offering a comparison with the results from the 2018 survey, which covered 2014 to 2018. The new data reveals shifts in the demographic makeup of the Spring and Klein area, which includes the ZIP codes 77068, 77069, 77070, 77379, 77388, and 77389.
Black Population Growth by ZIP Code
Data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that the number of Black or African American residents increased in all six Spring- and Klein-area ZIP codes from 2018 to 2023, though some areas saw more significant growth than others:
- ZIP code 77068: The population of Black or African American residents rose from 2,210 in 2018 to 3,758 in 2023.
- ZIP code 77069: The population increased from 4,098 in 2018 to 6,222 in 2023.
- ZIP code 77070: The Black or African American population grew from 9,346 in 2018 to 10,833 in 2023.
- ZIP code 77379: The number of Black residents rose from 7,538 in 2018 to 9,461 in 2023.
- ZIP code 77388: There was a jump from 5,492 Black or African American residents in 2018 to 9,713 in 2023.
- ZIP code 77389: The population grew from 1,882 in 2018 to 3,167 in 2023.
While ZIP code 77389 experienced the largest overall population increase (26%) from 2018 to 2023, the most substantial growth in Black or African American residents occurred in ZIP code 77388, with a roughly 77% increase over the five-year period, according to the data.
Growth Among Other Demographics
In addition to the rise in Black residents, the Spring and Klein area also saw substantial increases in the Hispanic or Latino and Asian populations. The number of Hispanic or Latino residents grew by 31% from 2018 to 2023, while the Asian population increased by 16% during the same period. However, the number of white-identifying residents in the area declined by 11% from 2018 to 2023.
The growth in the Hispanic or Latino population was most prominent in ZIP code 77379, which saw a significant jump from 13,382 in 2018 to 19,654 in 2023. Meanwhile, the Asian population grew in all Spring and Klein ZIP codes except for 77068, where it fell from 1,148 in 2018 to 761 in 2023.
White Population Trends
The only ZIP code in the Spring and Klein area that saw an increase in the white population was 77389, where the number of white-identifying residents rose from 21,367 in 2018 to 23,580 in 2023.
