A historic step has been taken in the UK Parliament with the formation of the Parliamentary Black Caucus, a cross-party alliance of Black and minority Members of Parliament and Lords. This initiative is aimed at promoting racial equality, justice, and greater representation for all.

Similar to the US Congressional Black Caucus, this newly established group includes UK parliamentarians from different political affiliations. Its launch coincides with the final day of American Black History Month, reinforcing its commitment to driving meaningful change.

The Caucus envisions a society where Black and minority communities, and by extension all citizens, can thrive without facing systemic harm. It will focus on policies that address issues disproportionately affecting these communities, including institutional racism and disparities in policing, immigration, education, healthcare, employment, housing, and the criminal justice system.

Dawn Butler, MP for Brent East and Founding Chair of the Caucus emphasized the significance of this development, stating:

“I’m honored to launch the Parliamentary Black Caucus – this is a historic step toward dismantling entrenched racial inequalities and ensuring Parliament reflects the diversity of the communities it serves.

I put on record our appreciation and admiration for those who came before us, the first Black Caucus – we stand on the shoulders of giants. Now, we must continue to progress toward equality and equity.

Black communities make the UK the successful, vibrant, and diverse place that it is today. We are politicians, doctors, nurses, bus drivers, artists, refuse collectors, entrepreneurs, journalists, judges, shop assistants, teachers, lawyers, and the list goes on. For years, we have worked to hold up important services that everyone relies on.

Despite this, we are still subject to structural racism. This needs to change, to ensure that the country is fair, no matter where you live, the color of your skin, or what class you are. So, I’m excited to be working with colleagues to deliver equality, equity, and justice for all – and I look forward to more colleagues joining the Caucus soon.”

Key Goals of the Parliamentary Black Caucus:

  • Enhancing inclusive and effective representation within Parliament.
  • Advocating for policies that combat racial inequality and promote social justice.
  • Providing a unified space for cross-party collaboration among Parliamentarians.
  • Recognizing and continuing the work of past leaders who have championed equality and diversity.

The Caucus aims to work transparently, engaging with community leaders, stakeholders, and parliamentary groups to enact meaningful reforms. It will also support Black politicians, councilors, and mayors, along with allies, to push for fairer policies and societies.

Membership is open to all Black and minority MPs and Members of the House of Lords who are committed to fostering a more inclusive and equitable society.

Founding Members:

  • Dawn Butler MP
  • Diane Abbott MP
  • Lord Bailey of Paddington
  • Lord Woolley of Woodford
  • Josh Babarinde MP

Other Members Include:

  • Marsha De Cordova MP
  • Clive Lewis MP
  • Kim Johnson MP
  • Paulette Hamilton MP
  • Kate Osamor MP
  • Bell Ribeiro-Addy MP

Additional members are expected to join in the coming weeks.
