A day after outlining his administration’s efforts to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education, President Donald Trump unveiled a plan to transfer federal programs supporting students with disabilities and school meals to the Department of Health and Human Services. This announcement has sparked further confusion and concern among education advocates, who argue that such policy moves contradict existing laws and long-standing precedent, Education Week reports.
Beth Maglione, interim president and CEO of the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, cautioned that implementing such a shift would not be immediate. “Any transfer of that responsibility would take time,” she noted.
She further emphasized the lack of a clear strategy, stating, “In the absence of any comprehensive plan, a serious concern remains: how will this restructuring be executed without disruption to students and institutions?” The National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA) includes external media coverage in its Notable Headlines section to keep members informed about financial aid developments.
