President Trump stated that he does not anticipate reparations being given to the descendants of slaves.

“I think it’s a very unusual thing. You have a lot of — it’s been a very interesting debate. I don’t see it happening, no,” Trump said in an interview with The Hill.

These remarks come after the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties held a hearing to discuss the topic.

The current proposal under review involves creating and funding a commission to study the potential impact of reparations.

An opinion article from NBC News highlights that many believe reparations would address more than just the institution of slavery, focusing on its long-lasting effects such as “100 years of Jim Crow legal segregation…persistent racism in the post-Civil Rights era continuing to the present…mass incarceration, police executions of unarmed blacks (de facto lynchings), discrimination in employment, and, significantly, the enormous racial wealth divide between black and white Americans.”

The New York Times reports that ideas under consideration include “zero-interest loans for prospective black homeowners, free college tuition, and community development plans aimed at promoting black-owned businesses in black neighborhoods.” Source: Aol.r prospective black homeowners, free college tuition, and community development plans aimed at promoting black-owned businesses in black neighborhoods.” Source: Aol.
