The Black History Commission of Arkansas was originally established as the Arkansas Black History Committee in 1991. Its name was officially changed in 1995 following the passage of Act 980.
Created under Act 1233, the commission consists of seven members appointed by the governor and is tasked with promoting and preserving Black history in Arkansas.
The BHCA continues to collect historical materials related to Arkansas’s Black history and influential figures for the Arkansas State Archives. It plays a key role in increasing awareness of the contributions and impact of Black Arkansans on the state’s history.
Additionally, the commission hosts two annual symposiums on Black history in February and June and oversees a grant program that supports preservation efforts and public programming projects related to Arkansas’s Black heritage.
