Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II has dedicated his career to problem-solving and public service. As Michigan’s first Black lieutenant governor, he has worked to create opportunities and improve government efficiency using his background in software engineering.

His priorities include entrepreneurship, criminal and juvenile justice reform, healthcare, affordable housing, and economic development, all aimed at ensuring every Michigander can reach their full potential.

As the leader of statewide task forces focused on jail policies, pretrial incarceration, and juvenile justice reform, Gilchrist worked across party lines to push for historic legislation. These reforms have strengthened Michigan’s justice system, reduced taxpayer costs, and expanded access to jobs and housing for thousands across the state.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he led Michigan’s Racial Disparities Task Force, taking decisive action to address the virus’s disproportionate impact on communities of color. Under his leadership, Michigan became a national leader in reducing racial health disparities and continues to expand access to affordable and equitable healthcare.

Gilchrist has also championed efforts to expand reliable and affordable high-speed internet, successfully connecting over 27,000 homes and businesses. His commitment to innovation and economic growth has positioned Michigan as a center for new ideas and technology.

Through his statewide “Thriving Cities” tour, he has engaged directly with communities to understand their needs and drive meaningful change. Additionally, he served as chair of the National Lieutenant Governors Association.
