George E. Moose is a distinguished American diplomat with a career spanning several decades. He served as the acting president and chief executive officer of the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) from April 25, 2024, until his departure in March 2025.

Moose’s diplomatic career includes significant appointments such as U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Benin and the Republic of Senegal. He also held the position of U.S. assistant secretary of state for African affairs from 1993 to 1997. Additionally, he served as the U.S. permanent representative to the European Office of the United Nations in Geneva from 1998 to 2001.

In June 2007, Moose was appointed to USIP’s board by the White House, serving as a member and later as chair until 2023. His leadership at USIP began in April 2024, following the appointment by the Institute’s Board of Directors.

In March 2025, the Trump administration initiated efforts to downsize organizations related to foreign assistance, including USIP. This led to the dismissal of most of the Institute’s board members and the removal of Moose from his position as president and CEO. Moose vowed legal action, claiming the takeover was illegal. citeturn0news15

Throughout his career, George Moose has been recognized for his commitment to diplomacy and international peace efforts.
