In a historic election on May 3, 2025, Marshall Simien Jr. was elected as the first Black mayor of Lake Charles, Louisiana. Simien, an independent candidate and former city council member, secured 52% of the vote, unseating two-term Republican incumbent Nic Hunter, who received 48%.

Simien brings a wealth of experience to the mayor’s office. A Lake Charles native, he holds a Bachelor of Arts in Government from McNeese State University and a Juris Doctor from Louisiana State University. His legal career includes serving as a judicial law clerk and founding the Simien Law Firm, focusing on commercial litigation and personal injury cases.

As mayor-elect, Simien is assembling a transition team to address key areas such as healthcare, local industry, and labor markets. He emphasizes the importance of a cohesive administration, stating, “I really need a team that’s going to be in sync and able to move the ball, and I can delegate and not have to second-guess or micromanage.”

His public service record is extensive. Simien served on the Lake Charles City Council from 2005 to 2013 and again in 2021, holding positions as vice-president and president. He also served on the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury and was appointed to the Louisiana State Board of Commerce & Industry.

Simien’s priorities include improving infrastructure, enhancing healthcare access, and addressing housing needs. He is particularly focused on equitable development across all areas of Lake Charles, including North Lake Charles, which he previously represented. “All sides of our city have certain unique aspects that come together that complement each other. That’s going to make us stronger,” he noted.

The election saw a voter turnout of 32%. Simien’s victory marks a significant milestone in the city’s history, reflecting a shift towards inclusive leadership and community-focused governance.

As he prepares to take office, Simien aims to foster unity and progress throughout Lake Charles, building on his extensive experience and deep roots in the community.
