U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has ordered the dismissal of diversity-related lawsuits against police and fire departments nationwide. This decision follows President Donald Trump’s directive to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies within both the public and private sectors.
DOJ Halts Legal Actions on Hiring Practices
On Wednesday, Feb. 26, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced in a press release that it would no longer pursue litigation regarding alleged discriminatory hiring practices in emergency response agencies.
Explaining the rationale behind the move, Bondi emphasized that emergency service personnel should be selected based on their qualifications rather than diversity mandates.
“American communities deserve firefighters and police officers to be chosen for their skill and dedication to public safety – not to meet DEI quotas,” Bondi stated.
Claims of Discriminatory Hiring Practices
The lawsuits in question challenged the use of aptitude tests as a screening tool for hiring firefighters and police officers. These assessments typically evaluate physical abilities, written comprehension, and functional skills essential for first responders.
Under the Biden administration, officials contended that these screening processes disproportionately affected Black and female applicants, arguing that the tests were discriminatory and violated federal law.
However, the Trump administration’s DOJ refuted these claims, asserting that there was no substantive evidence of intentional discrimination.
Settlements in North Carolina and Maryland
The dispute over hiring assessments led to a settlement in North Carolina, where state police were required to adjust their firefighter hiring exams.
Additionally, a separate investigation focused on long-standing discrimination allegations within the Maryland State Police, particularly concerning promotions and disciplinary actions. The inquiry concluded with a nearly $3 million settlement to address concerns over the agency’s hiring policies.
Bondi’s Assessment of Discrimination Claims
After assuming office, Bondi conducted a review of the prior administration’s allegations and determined that only statistical disparities were present, rather than clear evidence of intentional discrimination.
These disparities, primarily related to race, gender, and socioeconomic factors, may have influenced lower test scores among certain applicant groups.
