COLUMBUS, Ohio—Issue 1, a proposed constitutional amendment, has ignited debate across Ohio as it seeks to reshape the state’s redistricting process. The measure would determine how congressional districts are drawn, with elected officials and community leaders taking opposing stances. A “yes” vote would establish a 15-member citizen-led commission to oversee redistricting, while a “no” vote would maintain the current system, implemented by voters in 2015.

The issue has divided Ohio’s political landscape, including within the Black community. “This is a warning to Ohio voters,” said Ohio Sen. Michele Reynolds (R-Canal Winchester). “Be careful what you vote for.” On the other side, Ohio Sen. Hearcel Craig (D-Columbus) expressed strong support for the measure. “We cannot allow this injustice to continue any longer,” he said. “I will be voting yes on Issue 1 to ban gerrymandering and safeguard a representative legislature because the future of our state depends on it.”

Critics argue that Issue 1 mirrors Michigan’s citizen-led redistricting model, which resulted in Democratic control but also weakened Black-majority districts. “While the new district maps helped Michigan Democrats gain control of both legislative chambers, which is actually what this is about, the weakening of Black majority districts raises concerns about long-term stability,” Reynolds warned. She urged Black legislators backing the amendment to carefully consider its implications.

Supporters, however, see Issue 1 as a necessary reform to ensure fair representation. “This is not about the majority going from one party to another,” said Ohio Rep. Terrence Upchurch (D-Cleveland). “This is about creating a legislature that is reflective of the people of Ohio.” Ohio Rep. Dontavius Jarrells (D-Columbus) echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the amendment’s broader significance. “Michigan’s reforms were a step forward, but Issue 1 takes it even further,” he said. “This isn’t about politics for any of us. It’s not about Republicans versus Democrats. This is about fairness and justice.” Source: NBC 4
