In a decisive outcome, Aisha Braveboy has declared victory in the Prince George’s County Executive special election held on June 3, 2025. Braveboy, a Democrat and the county’s current State’s Attorney, secured approximately 89% of the vote, defeating Republican challenger Jonathan White, who garnered about 10%.
This special election was prompted by the resignation of former County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, who stepped down on December 2, 2024, after being elected to the U.S. Senate. Tara Jackson, the county’s Chief Administrative Officer, served as acting County Executive until the election.
Braveboy’s victory follows her success in the Democratic primary held on March 4, 2025, where she emerged as the nominee in a competitive field that included former County Executive Rushern L. Baker III, State Senator Alonzo T. Washington, and Council Member Calvin S. Hawkins II.
In her victory speech, Braveboy emphasized her commitment to addressing the county’s challenges and building upon its strengths. She highlighted the need to diversify the county’s economy, particularly in light of recent developments such as the cancellation of the new FBI headquarters project and the impending closure of Six Flags America. Braveboy stated, “We have to pivot, and we have to grow our commercial tax base and bring more industry into Prince George’s County.”
Governor Wes Moore endorsed Braveboy during her campaign, praising her leadership and vision for the county. He remarked, “She will be a fantastic partner in our shared mission of making Maryland and Prince George’s County safer, more affordable, and more competitive.”
Braveboy’s election marks a significant milestone in her political career, which includes service in the Maryland House of Delegates and her tenure as State’s Attorney since 2019. As County Executive, she will serve the remaining two years of Alsobrooks’s term, leading a county of approximately 947,000 residents.
With her decisive victory, Braveboy is poised to implement her agenda focused on economic development, public safety, and inclusive governance, shaping the future trajectory of Prince George’s County.
