State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy has taken a significant lead in the Prince George’s County executive special primary, securing 43.06% of the votes according to unofficial results. This positions her as the Democratic nominee for the upcoming general election on June 3, 2025.

Following the election of Senator Angela Alsobrooks to the U.S. Senate in November 2024, she resigned from her role as County Executive, prompting the need for this special election. The primary, held on March 4, 2025, featured eight Democratic and three Republican candidates vying for the position.

Braveboy declared victory at her campaign headquarters on election night, standing alongside Maryland Governor Wes Moore. Her closest competitor, Rushern Baker III, garnered just over 19% of the vote. He has remained publicly silent since Wednesday, when he emphasized the importance of counting all votes before drawing conclusions.

In a post on X, Baker stated, “While current tallies may suggest a certain outcome, it is imperative to recognize that a substantial number of votes remain uncounted. We owe it to every voter to ensure that each ballot is meticulously accounted for before drawing any conclusions.”

County Councilmember At-Large Calvin Hawkins, who secured approximately 16% of the vote, conceded to Braveboy on Friday morning. In his concession statement, Hawkins congratulated Braveboy and expressed his commitment to continue serving the residents of Prince George’s County. He wrote, “As a County Council member, my commitment to Prince George’s County residents remains steadfast. I will continue advocating for policies that strengthen our education system, enhance public safety, and support local businesses.”

On the Republican side, Jonathan White emerged as the leading candidate with 37.03% of the vote, surpassing George McDermott, who had previously declared victory on Tuesday night before all mail-in ballots were counted. As of noon Friday, neither White nor McDermott have made public statements regarding the updated results.

The general election is scheduled for June 3, 2025, where the nominees from both parties will compete to serve the remainder of Alsobrooks’s term as County Executive.
