British universities have significantly increased their spending on diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI) staff, with investment in these roles doubling over the past three years.
According to recent research, universities now allocate approximately £28 million annually to diversity positions.
Some of these roles come with salaries that exceed those of top academics at prestigious institutions. As reported by The Times, the highest-paid diversity chief earns a standard salary of nearly £120,000 pro rata.
The University of Oxford leads in the number of DEI roles, currently employing 59 staff members in this area at a cost of approximately £2.5 million.
The study, conducted by the Taxpayers’ Alliance, found that the cost of DEI departments in universities has surged by 125 percent, reaching an average of £168,000 per institution. Additionally, the number of DEI staff has grown by about 20 percent.
Critics argue that universities are spending millions on what they describe as “pointless” jobs. On average, each institution employs around seven DEI staff members, bringing the total number of diversity roles across British universities to more than 1,000. Source: GB News
