Outgoing Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Chair Steven Horsford (D-NV) joined the newly elected leadership team at the Capitol for a news conference to outline the caucus’s legislative agenda. With the CBC poised to achieve its largest membership in the upcoming 119th Congress, Horsford emphasized the caucus’s commitment to addressing critical issues facing the nation.
The caucus detailed its core priorities, including securing key committee assignments to amplify their legislative influence, safeguarding democratic processes, and fostering bipartisan collaboration when necessary. Horsford remarked on the importance of maintaining a robust democracy, stating, “Protecting democracy isn’t just a political imperative—it’s a moral one.”
Among other priorities, clemency and pardons surfaced as significant areas of focus, with the CBC expressing a desire to maximize these efforts during the remainder of President Biden’s administration. These initiatives align with the caucus’s broader goal of promoting social and racial equity.
The CBC’s expanding membership underscores the increasing diversity and influence of Black lawmakers in Congress. This growth is expected to bolster their capacity to advocate effectively for underserved communities and champion policies that advance equity and justice.
During the news conference, the caucus also reiterated its commitment to economic empowerment, healthcare equity, and criminal justice reform. These long standing priorities remain central to their mission as they prepare to navigate a divided Congress.
Horsford highlighted the importance of unity within the caucus to achieve their legislative objectives. “We are stronger together, and our collective voice can drive meaningful change,” he said, reflecting on his tenure and the incoming leadership’s vision for the future. Source: C-Span
