Exit polls indicate that Black voter support for Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election was not nearly identical to the support Black voters gave President Joe Biden in 2020. According to AP VoteCast, 83 percent of Black voters supported Harris, a slight drop from the 91 percent who backed Biden in 2020, while 16 percent of Black voters supported former President Donald Trump, doubling from the 8 percent who voted for him in 2020. Trump won the 2024 presidential race, securing the necessary 270 electoral votes with victories in swing states like Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
The data has prompted discussions on whether Black voter turnout was sufficient to propel Harris to the presidency. Although some political analysts suggested Harris had lost momentum with Black male voters, exit polls show consistent support compared to 2020. CNN exit polls reported that 86 percent of Black voters supported Harris, closely mirroring Biden’s 87 percent in 2020, with 12 percent voting for Trump in both elections. Among Black women, 92 percent supported Harris, while 78 percent of Black men backed her, only slightly lower than Biden’s support in 2020.
Despite minor shifts, Black voter loyalty remains strong for Democrats, contrasting with other groups; 52 percent of white women and 54 percent of Latino men supported Trump in this election, according to exit polls. These numbers underscore the enduring role of Black voters as a critical support base for Democratic candidates. Source: BIN
