In a decisive electoral outcome, longtime Mississippi State Senator John Horhn has been elected as the next mayor of Jackson, Mississippi, securing approximately 67% of the vote in the June 3, 2025, general election.
Horhn’s victory marks a significant political shift in the state’s capital, following his earlier triumph over incumbent Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba in the Democratic primary runoff.
Election Results and Voter Turnout
According to unofficial results, Horhn received 16,377 of the 24,466 votes cast, while his closest competitor, independent candidate Rodney DePriest, garnered 6,736 votes. Horhn carried 78 of the city’s 80 precincts, reflecting widespread support across Jackson.
A Long-Awaited Victory
This election marks Horhn’s fourth campaign for the mayoral seat. His previous attempts in 2009, 2014, and 2017 were unsuccessful. In his victory speech at The Plant Venue on Commerce Park Drive, Horhn expressed gratitude to his supporters and emphasized the need for unity and progress in Jackson.
Defeating an Embattled Incumbent
Horhn’s path to the mayor’s office included a significant victory over incumbent Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba in the Democratic primary runoff held on April 22, 2025. Lumumba, who was seeking a third term, faced federal bribery and conspiracy charges stemming from a November 2024 indictment.
The charges allege that Lumumba, along with Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens and City Council member Aaron B. Banks, accepted bribes from undercover FBI agents posing as real estate developers. All three have pleaded not guilty.
Looking Ahead
As mayor-elect, Horhn has pledged to address critical issues facing Jackson, including infrastructure improvements, crime reduction, and economic development. He emphasized collaboration with county, state, and federal partners to strengthen the city. “Together, we will build Jackson into a forward-thinking city that puts its citizens first,” Horhn stated.
City Council Elections
In addition to the mayoral race, Jackson voters elected members to the City Council. Notably, incumbent Ashby Foote maintained a slight lead in the Ward 1 race, though absentee ballots were still being counted as of June 4. Tina Clay secured her first full term as Ward 2 Councilwoman, while longtime Ward 3 Councilman Kenneth Stokes was re-elected.
Conclusion
John Horhn’s election as mayor represents a new chapter for Jackson, with residents expressing hope for effective leadership and tangible improvements in the city’s governance and infrastructure. As Horhn prepares to assume office, the focus now shifts to the implementation of his proposed initiatives and the fulfillment of his campaign promises.
