The Los Angeles County Commission on HIV’s (LACHIV) Black Caucus, in partnership with local leaders and organizations, is organizing a special World AIDS Day event on December 6 at Charles Drew University. The event aims to spotlight the sexual health needs of Black communities while providing education, support, and resources to attendees.
Titled “Our Stories, Our Strength: Elevating Black Lives on World AIDS Day,” the free event will feature HIV testing with a $25 gift card incentive, free lunch, giveaways, and a resource fair addressing both healthcare and broader community needs, such as food security. Entertainment and live performance art will also be part of the day’s offerings, creating an engaging and inclusive atmosphere.
Danielle Campbell, MPH, Co-Chair of LACHIV Black Caucus, emphasized the importance of addressing stigma in Black communities. “Black people are overrepresented in new HIV diagnoses and disproportionately affected by STIs. The stigma is a barrier to having these necessary conversations,” she said.
In addition to healthcare services, the event will foster dialogue and shared stories to inspire resilience and community solidarity. Leon Maultsby, Co-Chair of the LACHIV Black Caucus, stated, “This isn’t just about people living with HIV. It’s about everyone coming together to share stories, hear each other, and engage in solutions.”
Despite advancements in HIV prevention and treatment, Black communities continue to face significant disparities in health outcomes. Campbell highlighted the need for ongoing education to dispel harmful myths about HIV transmission and reduce stigma. “Many people still believe myths, like thinking HIV can be spread through casual contact,” she noted.
The event’s theme underscores storytelling as a source of strength and resilience. Reflecting on the importance of community unity, Campbell shared, “What has sustained us in this country for more than 400 years is us—our ability to come together and gather in ways that only we can do.”
