Washington — The 119th Congress officially opened with the swearing-in of two new senators, Lisa Blunt Rochester from Delaware and Angela Alsobrooks from Maryland. Both women bring unique perspectives to the Senate, marking historic moments in their respective states.

Lisa Blunt Rochester
Lisa Blunt Rochester, a 62-year-old Democrat from Delaware, continues to be a prominent advocate for racial equity and social justice. With a background in public service, Blunt Rochester’s entry into the Senate adds to her legacy of representing diverse communities. As Delaware’s first woman and first Black congresswoman, her leadership is expected to be a powerful voice for marginalized groups.

Angela Alsobrooks
Angela Alsobrooks, a former prosecutor and county executive from Maryland, has become the first Black senator from her state. Alsobrooks is known for her work in criminal justice reform and is committed to addressing social and racial disparities. Reflecting on her achievement, she noted the historic nature of her swearing-in, emphasizing the significance of representation for Black women in the Senate.
