On December 19, 2023, New York Governor Kathy Hochul made a pivotal move by signing a landmark bill into law, establishing a commission dedicated to studying and exploring the possibility of implementing slavery reparations within the state. This newly formed commission represents a crucial step in New York’s efforts to confront the enduring legacy of slavery, racial discrimination, and systemic inequality that has affected Black communities for generations.
The signing ceremony, held in a moment of historical significance, was attended by several key figures who have long been advocates for racial justice and equality. Joining Governor Hochul were Dr. Yohuru Williams, a noted scholar and director of the Racial Justice Initiative at the University of St. Thomas; Andrea Stewart-Cousins, the Majority Leader of the New York State Senate; Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages, a champion for social justice; Rev. Al Sharpton, a prominent civil rights leader; Carl Heastie, Speaker of the New York State Assembly; and State Senator James Sanders.
Together, this group of leaders stood in solidarity, underscoring the importance of the new commission in addressing the historical and ongoing harms caused by slavery and institutional racism. The commission will carefully examine the impacts of these injustices and explore potential remedies, including reparations, that aim to foster equity and healing for affected communities.
