A presentation focused on advancing reparations for Black New Yorkers and descendants of slaves will take place the day after the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday. The event, titled “Just Conversations | Reparations in NYC: A Path Toward Justice and Equity,” will occur on Tuesday, January 21, at the Othmer Library located at 128 Pierrepont St. The discussion will center on the legislation passed by four City Councilmembers this fall aimed at securing reparations.
Speakers at the event will include Brooklyn Councilmembers Crystal Hudson (D-35/Fort Greene to Crown Hts.), a third-generation Brooklynite with Jamaican and Honduran roots, and Dr. Nantasha Williams (D-Queens). Linda Tigani, Executive Director of the NYC Commission on Racial Equity, will moderate the panel. The Commission has been working alongside the NYC Council to establish a comprehensive framework for racial justice.
The program, part of the “Just Conversations” series, is sponsored by the Brooklyn Public Library Government Affairs and the BPL’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council. Attendees must register in advance for the in-person event.
While national conversations about reparations have stalled in Congress since the 1980s, New York City and other communities across the country have taken proactive steps toward reparative justice. These initiatives include public apologies, memorials, and projects aimed at addressing persistent inequalities in housing, healthcare, and legal services. Source: Brooklyn Eagle
