Vice President Kamala Harris emphasized the need to study financial reparations for Black Americans while promoting her economic agenda aimed at building intergenerational wealth in the Black community.
“On the point of reparations, it has to be studied, there’s no question about that,” Harris said during an audio town hall with radio host Charlamagne tha God on Tuesday. This event is part of her broader outreach campaign targeting Black male voters.
Harris used the opportunity to highlight her economic policies, which she believes will increase access to financial capital for Black entrepreneurs and provide support for homebuyers. She also emphasized her efforts to strengthen community banks that serve historically underserved populations.
“My agenda is about tapping into the ambitions and aspirations of people who want the opportunity to build wealth, including intergenerational wealth,” Harris said.
The issue of reparations for Black Americans has gained traction in recent years, with California in 2023 becoming the first state to assign a potential dollar value to multi-generational inequality stemming from slavery. However, the topic remains politically divisive.
Harris made these remarks during a visit to the Detroit metropolitan area, a crucial swing region in Michigan, aimed at countering former President Donald Trump’s growing influence among Black voters—particularly men—with only three weeks left until Election Day.
Trump has actively courted Black male voters, traditionally a key Democratic demographic, by appealing to concerns over President Joe Biden’s record and economic mobility.
Recently, Harris announced economic policies specifically addressing these issues, including a plan to offer 1 million fully forgivable loans of up to $20,000 for entrepreneurs. She also pledged to support a regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies, aiming to provide investment certainty for the 20% of Black Americans who own or have owned digital assets.
