ST. PAUL, Minn. — A significant step towards historical restoration was taken in St. Paul as the original name of Concordia Avenue was officially reinstated to “Rondo Avenue,” marking a symbolic return to the area’s roots.
Rondo, once a thriving hub of the Twin Cities’ Black community, fell victim to systematic destruction between 1956 and 1968, clearing the way for Interstate 94.
During this period, 700 homes were razed, displacing over 60% of Rondo’s inhabitants, alongside the demise of approximately 300 Black-owned enterprises.
Mayor Melvin Carter, St. Paul’s inaugural Black mayor, presided over the unveiling ceremony of the new Rondo Avenue signage at the junction with North Fisk Street, attended by numerous community leaders, including former St. Paul City Councilmember Russel Balenger.
Reflecting on the resilience of the community, Balenger remarked, “We carried the essence of community with us wherever we went, rebuilding and preserving our spirit.” Source: CBSNews
Poet Marie Flowers echoed sentiments of perseverance, emphasizing the indomitable spirit passed down through generations. “Our determination is unyielding, a legacy we impart to future generations, ensuring they continue the work begun by our ancestors,” Flowers declared.
St. Paul has embarked on various initiatives to revitalize Rondo, such as the establishment of the St. Paul Inheritance Fund. This fund offers grants of up to $110,000 to direct descendants of former residents, aiding in home purchases.
Additionally, ReConnect Rondo spearheads efforts to construct a land bridge over I-94, envisioned as a space for greenery, cultural outlets, and health services. State funding of $5 million was allocated in 2021, supplemented by a $2 million federal grant in 2023.
Another endeavor, the Rethinking I-94 project led by the Minnesota Department of Transportation, seeks to transform a 7.5-mile stretch of the interstate into a boulevard, addressing the historical injustices inflicted upon Rondo and other marginalized communities.
The restoration of Rondo Avenue serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience and determination of St. Paul’s Black community, commemorating its enduring legacy while laying the groundwork for a more equitable future.
