The Minnesota Historical Society presents The Brothers of Rondo, a powerful account of four men—Lewis Scott, Russel T. Balenger, Readus W. Fletcher, and Carl Griffin—who grew up in the historic Rondo neighborhood of Saint Paul.

Despite facing the upheaval caused by the construction of I-94, which displaced much of their community, these men persevered. Their shared experiences in Rondo and their education at Minnesota State University Moorhead shaped them into influential leaders in their respective fields.

The documentary highlights the deep cultural significance of Rondo, once a thriving hub of Black life and enterprise, before being disrupted by urban renewal projects.

The resilience of the “Brothers” is a testament to the strength of community ties, as they carried forward the values instilled in them by their upbringing. The film delves into their journeys, revealing how they turned adversity into an opportunity to uplift others, shaping policies, initiatives, and institutions that continue to impact Minnesota today.

Through personal narratives, The Brothers of Rondo sheds light on the broader challenges Black communities have faced throughout history—displacement, systemic racism, and economic barriers.

Yet, rather than focusing solely on the hardships, the documentary underscores the power of perseverance and the role of education, mentorship, and activism in overcoming obstacles. Each of the four men left a lasting legacy, whether in public service, education, or community advocacy.

By sharing these stories, the Minnesota Historical Society ensures that Rondo’s history and its contributions to Black culture are not forgotten. The documentary serves as both a tribute to the men who carried its legacy forward and a reminder of the enduring strength found in collective resilience.
