According to an NAACP poll released on Friday, over a quarter of younger Black men have expressed support for Republican candidate Donald Trump in this year’s U.S. presidential election. Historically, Black voters have been one of the most steadfast Democratic constituencies. However, under Democratic President Joe Biden’s administration, some younger Black voters and Black men of all ages have grown disillusioned with the Democratic Party. Black voters played a pivotal role in Biden’s 2020 election victory, and Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris is counting on their continued support in the upcoming November 5 election.
The NAACP survey, conducted among 1,000 registered Black voters from August 6 to August 12, revealed that 63% of Black voters plan to back Harris, while 13% intend to support Trump. However, 26% of Black men under 50 indicated support for Trump, compared to 49% who favored Harris. Among Black men over 50, 77% said they supported Harris. Meanwhile, 67% of Black women stated they would vote for Harris, while only 8% favored Trump.
The survey highlighted key concerns for Black voters, with the economy, crime, and public safety at the forefront. Economic issues, such as the rising cost of food, housing, and utilities, were identified as the most pressing challenges. A significant 82% of Black men under 50 cited economic concerns as the top issues facing the nation, while 75% of Black women of all ages echoed similar sentiments.
The survey also found that voter messaging emphasizing that rights are “under attack” has the potential to mobilize undecided voters and younger Black men. Source: Reuters
