PENNSAUKEN, N.J. (WPVI) — History was made as Nicole Roberts was sworn in as the first African American woman to serve as mayor in Pennsauken Township.

“I’m feeling really excited,” Roberts shared with Action News just hours ahead of the milestone ceremony.

Pennsauken, a racially diverse community, has had both African American and female mayors in the past, but Roberts is the first to represent both identities in the township’s history.

“I feel like… I’m ready,” Roberts said confidently.

Roberts, who has served on the township committee for four years, is no stranger to breaking barriers. In 2020, she became the first Black woman elected to the committee.

“I didn’t realize it until someone pointed it out: ‘You’re the first,'” she recalled.

Politics wasn’t always on Roberts’ radar. She entered public service after being encouraged by a former mayor to contribute to the community where she grew up.

“I felt ready to serve, to really serve,” she explained.

A graduate of Pennsauken High School, Roberts married her high school sweetheart and is a mother of four. Before transitioning into politics, she dedicated decades to a career in education. In 2022, she again made history as the first Black woman to hold the position of deputy mayor.

“I’m truly humbled and honored,” Roberts said of her election as mayor. “Being the first African American woman means so much to me and my community.”

Roberts hopes her journey inspires others, particularly young women, to consider paths in politics and public service.

“Hopefully, young women will see me not just as a role model but as proof of what they can aspire to,” she said.

As mayor, Roberts, a Democrat, plans to prioritize public safety, expand parks and community spaces, and ensure residents feel valued and heard.

“I want to make sure our residents feel protected, cared for, and that they have a voice,” she emphasized.

With a message of empowerment, Roberts encouraged others to dream big.

“Never limit yourself,” she urged. “You really can do anything!” Source: 6 ABC Action News
