President-elect Donald Trump has named Scott Turner, a former Texas state lawmaker, as his choice to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Announced Friday night, Turner becomes the first Texan selected for Trump’s second Cabinet.
Turner, who represented Frisco in the Texas House from 2013 to 2017, previously served as executive director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council during Trump’s first term. If confirmed, he will oversee HUD and provide housing-related policy advice to the President.
An alumnus of the University of Illinois, Turner had a brief career in the NFL, playing for teams such as the Washington Redskins (now Commanders), the San Diego Chargers, and the Denver Broncos. His political career began with an unsuccessful Congressional bid in California in 2006, but he later secured a seat in the Texas Legislature in 2012. Turner served until 2017, stepping down after a failed attempt in 2015 to unseat then-House Speaker Joe Straus.
Turner is also the founder of the Community Engagement & Opportunity Council, which supports American communities through initiatives in sports, mentorship, and economic development. Additionally, he chairs the Center for Education Opportunity at the Trump-aligned America First Policy Institute.
“Scott will work alongside me to Make America Great Again for EVERY American,” Trump stated.
Other Texans nominated for roles in Trump’s administration include former U.S. Rep. John Ratcliffe for CIA director, Elon Musk for Department of Government Efficiency, and Tulsi Gabbard, a former Hawaii representative now residing in Leander, for director of national intelligence.
