History was made as Nicole Roberts was sworn in as the first African American woman to serve as mayor in Pennsauken Township.
“I’m feeling really excited,” Roberts shared with Action News just hours ahead of the milestone ceremony.
Pennsauken, a racially diverse community, has had both African American and female mayors in the past, but Roberts is the first to represent both identities in the township’s history.
“I feel like… I’m ready,” Roberts said confidently.
Roberts, who has served on the township committee for four years, is no stranger to breaking barriers. In 2020, she became the first Black woman elected to the committee.
